Rob Roy
FOUNDER & CEO
Rob Roy is widely recognized as the inventor of many critical data center innovations that have become industry standards. His patented designs for cooling, power distribution, software, networking and physical security have enabled data centers to scale to densities and efficiencies that were previously thought impossible. Since founding the company in 2000, he has led Switch as founder, CEO, designer and inventor — engineering digital infrastructure as an integrated system long before the industry recognized its importance.
Combining business leadership, engineering precision, commercial strategy, and advanced technology vision, Mr. Roy has designed some of the largest and most advanced technology ecosystems ever built. His breakthroughs in the data center industry first materialized as a modular design in 2005 and the world’s first gigawatt scale campus in 2015. These Switch campus ecosystems are currently growing to multiple gigawatt scale locations across the United States. These original industry leading extreme density designs have now evolved into the world’s most powerful Cloud/AI Factories — hybrid air- and liquid-cooled environments purpose-built for accelerated computing and engineered to scale with Cloud and AI’s multi-generational roadmaps.
Decades before artificial intelligence reshaped global infrastructure demand, Rob Roy anticipated the need for AI-native environments. Today, his vision powers the foundation of the Cloud/AI economy — positioning Switch as a leading owner, developer, and operator of digital exascale data center ecosystems.
