Union Switch & Signal has been working in partnership with Railroad customers to provide a method to verify the integrity of railroad track in dark territory. As a result of the R&D efforts, Union Switch & Signal has developed a cost effective, technically innovative approach to provide information on track integrity to trains approaching selected blocks of territory equipped with the Union Switch and Signal track integrity device.

This approach is based on the US&S MicroTrax Coded Track Circuit system with the additional feature of a sleep mode operation for power conservation. The Railroad customers interest in this implementation is largely based on well proven reliability of MicroTrax as a track circuit, able to operate over exceptional length in adverse conditions while providing broken rail detection. The sleep mode operation is utilized to allow the MicroLok II Wayside logic controller with the US&S MicroTrax track circuit to turn itself off during periods of train inactivity and a means to restore operation when train movement once again resumes. This feature allows the MicroTrax system to conserve power thus providing a logical option for applications where solar power is preferred over the expense of running power cables to remote locations.
