The US&S Wireless Remote Authority application enables track authorities to be entered and removed by work crews with little dispatcher intervention. Work crews can manage the authorities with a remote device such as a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA). The PDA is linked via a wireless connection to a US&S Computer Aided Dispatching (CAD) system or a stand alone Authority System.
The US&S Wireless Remote Authority application permits track forces to request, modify, review or remove authorities. Application logic at the CAD system validates authority information and notifies the dispatcher of an authority request from the field. The dispatcher can accept, modify or reject the authority. The updated authority information is displayed and highlighted on the work crews' wireless device within seconds. The remote user will use a Read-Back form on the PDA to review and initial any changes made by the dispatcher. When the work crew has completed work, the remote application can be used to release or rollup the authority. The release of authority is communicated to the CAD system where the dispatcher is updated with the release limits.
The US&S Remote Authority uses a wireless link to connect a handheld PDA or other device to a railroad's CAD system. The user operates within a familiar web browser interface to select the applicable feature. All information fits nicely onto the screen of a handheld device. The work crews can create, modify or remove Authorities. The following information can be accessed from the field:
- Authority ID
- Reason code
- Authority limits
- Expiration time
- Current status
- Summary of Authorities
In the office, the dispatcher controlling the area receives an alert message when an Authority is requested, modified or removed.
