UNION SWITCH & SIGNAL (US&S) TO PROVIDE AUTOMATIC TRAIN CONTROL (ATC) SYSTEM FOR THESSALONIKI METRO SYSTEM

Pittsburgh, PA - Union Switch & Signal Inc. (US&S) executed a contract with Ansaldo Trasporti Sistemi Ferroviari S.p.A. (ATSF) to provide all of the Automatic Train Protection (ATP), Automatic Train Operation (ATO), and Automatic Train Supervision (ATS) functions and capabilities for the Thessaloniki Metro system. This project will be US&S' fifth steel wheel driverless Automatic Train Control (ATC) System installed worldwide.

The project will draw on the experience gained by Ansaldo companies in building the Copenhagen Metro, which has been operating reliably and safely for more than four years. Most recently, US&S has teamed with ATSF and Ansaldobreda to implement this same technology on the Brescia, Rome Line C, and Milan Line 5 Metro Systems. US&S will be providing its proven automatic signaling technology and products. No driver or conductor will be required onboard the trains, and all operation, security checking, and information support will be carried out remotely and automatically.

The Thessaloniki metro will run underground for its entire length of approximately 9.5 km, and will include 13 stations. The system will be able to transport 18,000 passengers per hour in each direction, with trains running every 90 seconds. The work is scheduled for completion and opening in 2012.
