US&S to Supply Major Re-Signaling Effort for New Customer Quebec North Shore & Labrador
Pittsburgh, PA - Union Switch & Signal Inc. (US&S) has been awarded a contract for the major re-signaling of Quebec North Shore & Labrador Railway (QNS&L), a subsidiary of Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC). The project involves the replacement of relay-based interlockings with MicroLok® II-based systems with MicroTrax track circuits along QNS&L's 260 mi/ 418 km of track.
The contract also includes the provision of the Enhanced Remote Monitoring package, which will enable the railroad—from the Operations Control Center—to monitor the status of interlocking equipment and run the diagnostic and maintenance tools for all Internet Protocol (IP)-addressed MicroLok® II locations.
"The actual CTC system on our railway was installed in 1954 and needed to be replaced, in order to increase the reliability of the signalisation system and reduce the train circuit time. This new electronic interlocking system will help us meet our future transportation targets at a minimum traveling time," stated Mario Boudreau, project engineer at IOC.
The first six locations will be installed by the end of 2006. This will be followed by 42 location installations in the year 2007 and 55 locations installation by the end of 2008.
