The new M-Style Switch Machine ECC Electronic Circuit Controller can be used as a "drop-in" replacement for the mechanical circuit controller in US&S M-style switch machines, and it's a fea-tured component in the new US&S M-23E switch machine. A true linear detection device with no moving mechanical parts, the ECC eliminates cir-cuit-controller sensitivity degradation due to com-ponent wear. The ECC also provides advanced LED diagnostics, as well as an optional auxiliary point-detection system that predicts switch machine failures.

The ECC is a microprocessor-based circuit controller that utilizes inductive proximity sensors to continu-ously monitor switch machine conditions. The device vitally monitors the position of the switch points and the internal locking mechanism, delivering switch machine indications to the wayside. The ECC's advanced diagnostic system analyzes both local machine status and adjacent switch machine indi-cation circuitry. The ECC also can be equipped with an auxiliary point-detection system that monitors switch-point position to a tighter tolerance, reporting marginal switch machine performance to the wayside and pre-dicting failures before they occur. The ECC consists of a main controller unit, four vital and two non-vital proximity sensors, a junction box, a motor control unit (MCU), and a terminal board assem-bly. The controller unit vitally monitors the point and lock proximity sensors, making logical machine-state decisions and delivering the switch indication output. The junction box is the termination point for all proxim-ity sensors, and it's equipped with configuration jump-ers to determine the normally closed point and to select latch-out options. The MCU removes power from the motor control circuit only after the machine is fully locked, and it applies a dynamic brake at the end of each stroke to minimize shock to the drive train. The terminal board assembly is the termination point for all field wires, and it's equipped with 14 I/O gas tube arrestors for lightning protection.
