The Digitair Model 6680 Communication Interface Unit (CIU) is a compact, plug-in, locomotive-mount-ed unit designed specifically for integrated-cab locomotives. The Model 6680 CIU performs all of the necessary logic for two-way communications with any end-of-train device (EOTD) employing AREMA-specified guidelines and protocols, and facilitates the display of EOTD information through the locomotive's on-board computer. The CIU meets or exceeds all AREMA guidelines for end-of-train telemetry.
The Model 6680 CIU is designed to plug into the electrical locker of any locomotive equipped with an integrated on-board computer utilizing any of the follow-ing protocols: LSI, ICE, FIRE or IFC. The Model 6680 CIU transmits and receives data to and from the EOTD and relays the data via a serial link to the locomotive's core processor. The locomotive core processor then displays the EOT information on standardized display screens in the cab.
The primary function of the CIU is to monitor EOT brake-pipe pressure continuously and provide the ability to vent the brake pipe through the EOTD attached to the last car of the train. Other ancillary functions of the CIU include receiving and transmitting data relative to the motion and direction of the last car of the train, as well as the status of the marker light, telemetry battery and emergency-brake solenoid.
