To increase the effectiveness and the level of safety of continuous cab control systems, it became apparent that a means of enforcing positive stop and civil speed restrictions was needed. In response to these requirements, Union Switch & Signal has developed the Advanced Speed Enforcement System (ASES).
The US&S ASES system typically consists of the following major subsystems and products:
Intermittent-based Speed Enforcement Subsystem (SES):
- On-board cardfile (controlling electronics)
- On-board RF antenna for reading track Transponders
- Track-mounted wayside Transponders (active and passive)
- Wayside Transponder Encoders for reprogramming active Transponders
- MicroCab Continuous Cab Signal (CCS) subsystem:
- On-board cardfile (controlling electronics) independent of the SES cardfile
- Track receivers for picking up cab signal codes from rails
- LCD-based Aspect Display Unit (ADU) to show both SES and CCS indications and accept train operator inputs
- Axle speed sensors to feed vehicle speed data to both the SES and CSS subsystems
